Here are some tips and tricks for budgeting when it comes to food and flatting. For more information on food, including some recipes and videos, please see our Food Recipes and Meal Plans.
- If it suits you and your flatmates, cook shared meals. This is a good way to bond with your flatmates, means less work for you as you don’t have to cook every night, and minimises food waste.
- If you do cook alone, plan out your meals for the week. Cook enough so that you have leftovers that you can take for lunch or eat the following night, or freeze them for another time.
- When you’re shopping, look at the price by weight/single item (usually written under the actual price) to compare value.
- Look up the best way to store each food item online to maximise its lifespan.
- During semester times, OUSA Clubs and Socs run a daily free breakfast for current Otago University Students and Otago Polytech Students. Join them during the semester every Monday to Friday morning, 8am – 10am in their Evison Lounge (first floor of the Clubs and Societies building) for freshly cooked porridge, hot drinks and toast.
- $4 lunch is served Monday to Friday from 12pm to 2pm at the OUSA Clubs and Socs building. There are also additional food items available for purchase including butter chicken and samosas.
- OUSA Clubs and Socs offer $5 dinner in collaboration with The Bowling Club. Order your meal through The Bowling Club Website and pick up on Mondays and Wednesdays between 5 and 6pm at the OUSA Clubs and Socs building (84 Albany Street). Terms and Conditions can be found on the OUSA Clubs and Socs website.
