Here at Queer Support, we offer workshops available to university staff and students. Our standard 60 minute Queer 101 is the most popular option, and other workshops can be provided that are specifically tailored to your group. Please contact q.support@ousa.org.nz to get more information about booking a session for your team.
Upcoming Workshops open to staff throughout the Otago University:
Queer 101 – LGBTQIA+ Community is a workshop that aims to empower those wanting to gain more knowledge around the rainbow community and some methods of best practice.
With a significant proportion of our university students being a part of the rainbow community, it is highly relevant for all university staff to have an understanding of how to support students who identity as queer. Knowledge is one of the best ways to combat discrimination, exclusion, and lack of understanding, which is what this workshop aims to do. Focusing on understanding the identities the LGBTQIA+ community encompasses, we offer practical tips on how to be more mindful and considerate when interacting with, working with, and representing those within the community. By the end of this workshop, you will have had the opportunity to:
- Gain a simple definition of the LGBTQIA+ identities within the community and common terminology
- Understand unconscious bias and how this affects the support that is offered to students
- Build your confidence when using pronouns used by non-binary students
- Understand the specific challenges that queer students go through while at university
- Discuss some practices to put into place within your team to offer more mindful and empathetic support towards members of the queer community
